The Tupelo-Lee Humane Society (TLHS) began operating out of a city-owned building on South Gloster Street in Tupelo in 1995. The building was built in 1960 as a veterinary clinic. Re-purposing the facility as an animal shelter has been challenging through the years, and the building has required numerous renovations. The 50+ year old building does not meet current building codes and has electrical, heating and air, and plumbing problems. The current TLHS building is scheduled for demolition as soon as a new shelter is complete.
An extensive evaluation by the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, performed in 2006, indicated that sanitation and disease control were primary issues for the shelter to address and confirmed that the current building is no longer able to meet the community’s needs as an animal shelter.
TLHS announced Aug. 12, 2011, that Big Oaks Farm donated land on Cliff Gookin Boulevard in Tupelo for the building of a new animal shelter. The parcel of land is located just east of the service station on the corner of Thomas Street and Cliff Gookin Boulevard.
TLHS, along with a local architect, has designed a building that is inviting, efficient, and can accommodate current and future needs. The new facility will provide adequately sized and spaced cages and kennels that will house approximately 300 animals, including segregated spaces for incoming animals, segregated rehabilitation and isolation areas for cats and dogs, and indoor/outdoor kennels for dogs.
The new shelter will include a spay/neuter clinic and education and training center to help promote the need for spaying/neutering and the proper and humane care/handling of animals.
The new shelter will make it possible for TLHS to save more animals than ever before! Over $1,000,000 has already been raised!
