Euthanasia Policy

What is TLHS euthanasia policy?

Sadly, many of the animals that come to us are in poor condition and some do have to be humanely put to sleep. We generally try to limit euthanasia to animals that are diseased, injured, and/or have uncontrollable or aggressive behaviors.  However, during the summer months, when intake is greatest, healthy animals do have to be put down.  TLHS doesn't shy away from this issue.  We hope the "reality of it" will drive home the point of having your pet spayed or neutered!!

Please seeour Spay/Neuter Clinic page for more information on this topic!

In addition to our spay clinic work, we also work with several organizations to help more dogs find homes. This in turn reduces the number of euthanasia's.

Homeward Bound is one of the organizations:

Homeward Bound is a student run organization at the Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Its purpose is to reduce the pet overpopulation problem in the south by sending dogs up to northern shelters in New York and the New England states for adoption. We work with several shelters in Mississippi, including the Tupelo Lee Humane Society, and also take in adoptable stray/abandoned animals from the area. Many of the dogs from Tupelo are spayed and neutered by our 2nd year MSU students, and then placed into Homeward Bound for adoption. We work with wondeful foster familes that care for eligible dogs until they can travel north. In  the three years since the program was begun by several vet students. over 1500 dogs have been placed in forever homes in northern states!

We are grateful to the hard volunteer work these vet students perform to help save shelter animals.  We are proud to work with them and wish for their continued success.  They are an all volunteer organization and work on donations also. Visit the MSU Vet School Website and make a contribution to the Humane Ethics and Animal Welfare Support Fund (Fund #402096)
